ASSAM

Assam is known as the land of green valleys, blue hills and a red river. Situated just below the eastern Himalayan foothills, it is surrounded by the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya, which together with Assam are known collectively as the seven sisters.Assam (also known as Ahom) is the largest and most accessible of the Northeast States. Assam has cuisines with its own distinctive aromas and tastes, has a courteous population, a vivid artistic culture marked by exotic dance forms, and a chain of elegant Hindu temples & many countless natural attractions.Assam is a perfect destination for the wildlife enthusiasts due to its unique ecology.

GEOGRAPHY OF ASSAM

The state of Assam is located in the North East of India and borders West Bengal.Assam shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh with hilly terrain.Most part of the land is auto irrigated through natural ways by rivers- Brahmaputra and Barak and has the most number of tea gardens in India. Some popular cities are Guwahati, Dispur, Jorhat, Tezpur, and Dhubri.Assam posses Tropical Monsoon Rainforest Climate and experiences heavy rainfall and high humidity.

Assam produces around 25 percent of the world's tea and has been a world leader in the production of tea for more than one hundred years. It is also the producer of high-quality silk and is the only place in the world where all four major silk types are cultivated. The four major silk types are: 1) Paat bred on mulberry leaves 2) Golden silk Muga 3) The Ahimsa silk Eri bred on castor leaves 4) Tassar Assam also has the highest reserves of oil and natural gas after Bombay High and Gujarat.

IDEAL VISIT TIME & SAFETY ADVICE

 

The monsoons last in Assam between June and September, which is when travel is best avoided. The winter months, between October and February, are the best times to visit. While there is no strict regulation about visiting the state, look for stipulations and rules and ensure they are followed. Ensure that you are fit and in good health when visiting. If you have any health ailments, look for milder forms of adventure sport and simpler activity. Avoid challenging ones like rafting and boat racing. Angling and cruises can help relax you.
