GEOGRAPHY & CLIMATE

Uttarakhand is divided into mainly two regions which are Garhwal and Kumaon. This two region consists of 13 districts. Nainital, Almora, Pithoragarh, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, Champawat, Chamoli, Tehri Garhwal, Haridwar falls under the districts of Garhwal region.

 

 

Dehradun is the capital state of Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand has a total area of 53,483 km and is covered by forest and mountains.The forest mainly consists of Pine and Oak trees.The Northern part of the area is covered by glaciers and high Himalayan peaks mostly. The Ganges at Gangotri and Yamuna at Yamunotri are the two most important rivers which have originated from the glaciers of Uttarakhand and are fed by myriad lakes, glacial melts and streams. The Ganges at Gangotri and Yamuna at Yamunotri and Badrinath and Kedarnath from the Chota Char Dham are the holy pilgrimage for the Hindus.

 

 

Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park of the Indian subcontinent. The Valley of Flowers is located in the upper expanses of Bhyundar Ganga near Joshimath in Garhwal region. It is known for the variety and rarity of its flowers and plants. The Valley of Flowers is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

 

 

Climate and vegetation of the area depend upon the altitude, at the high altitude the glaciers are found whereas at lower level subtropical forests are found.The best time to visit the high altitude places is summer as winters can be very cold here and most areas become inaccessible to visit but for lower altitude areas winter is also fine.
