Wildlife - Tour in Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary

Location : 46 km from Delhi, on the Delhi - Gurgaon - Gaurakhnagar road.

Climate : The climate of this region is tropical with very hot summers and chilly winters.

Best time to visit : September to March is the best time to visit.

Access : Air : Airport - Located at a distance of 35 km from Domestic and International airports in Delhi. Road : Delhi, at a distance of around 45 km from Sultanpur. Rail : Railway Station - Gurgaon Railway Station (15 km) .

Introduction : The Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, 42 km south-west of Delhi, was first founded by the famous ornithologist, Peter Jackson. Keeping in view it''''s importance and potential, the area covering 359 acres was declared a Bird Sanctuary in 1971 and was upgraded to the status of National Park in 1991 by Haryana Government. The name of Dr. Salim Ali, an internationally renowned Ornithologist is associated with the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary also has a museum, watch towers and hideouts. For visitors some facilities have been provided like an education and interpretation center, a library as well as films, slides and binoculars.

Bird Species : In Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, 250 bird species have been recorded, 150 are resident while others come from distant regions like Siberia, Europe and Afghanistan. The commen species of birds found are common hoopoe, paddyfield pipit, purple sunbird, shikra, little cormorant, eurasian thick-knee, gray francolin, black francolin, indian roller, kingfisher, spot billed duck, painted stork, spoonbills, white ibises, herons, large cormorants,pelicans, flamingoes, egrets, red wattled lapwings and plovers etc.

Wildlife Species : Other wildlife in the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary include blackbuck, nilgai, hog deer, sambar, wild dog or dhole, caracal, wild cat, hedgehog, mongoose, striped hyena, Indian porcupine, rattle/honey badger, leopard, wild pig, and four horned antelope.

Vegetation : The vegetation of this park is tropical and dry deciduous and the flora include grasses, dhok, khair, tendu, ber, jamun, acacia, and banyan tree.
