There are a number of trekking trails from Kishtwar to a number Himalayan peaks that are not at a very great altitude. In fact these treks can be completed within a weeks time.

Trekking- Kargil to Padum

Trekking- Kargil to Padum Padum is famous as a major trekking base and a popular tourist destination. Kargil to Padum: When all bridges are open the route is accessible from early June to late October. On the last day''''s walk from Phe to Padum you cross the river and pass by the Sani gompa, one of the most important in Zanskar. Padum to Lamayuru: The alternative route from Padum starts out on the opposite side of the Zanskar river and takes you to the Linghsot gompa before joining up with the first route at day 5. Padum to Kishtwar: You cannot use horses on this route but must take porters. On day 4 your Zanskari porters will not continue further and you must hire local porters or a pony. The last few days are hard work with many ascents and descents but the road from Kishtwar, already extending to Galar, is gradually being lengthened.

Trekking in Ladakh

Trekking in Ladakh Ladakh, tucked between two of the world''''s greatest mountain ranges -- the Himalayas and the Karakoram, offers adventure amidst beauty which surpasses any other mountain range. It''''s snow-clad peaks, translucent lakes, barren terrain and mystic culture has attracted tourists and explorers from all over the world. The main hindrance in trekking in this region is due to cold waves and snow, i.e, extreme wintry conditions. For trekking in Ladakh, one has to be physically fit and prepared to face the rigors of back country travel as well. The best season to go on trekking expeditions in this region is between Jul-Sept. Trekking possibilities include short, day-long walks or long mountain treks involving weeks of walking and camping in the wilderness. As the terrain is inhospitable and ecology very fragile, it is advisable to take as much provision and fuel as possible from the base camp. The evenings are chilly and the days are rather hot. Thus, special clothing is required for trekking in this region. Pullovers and anoraks should be kept handy. A water-proof tent will have to be carried besides provisions and cooking gears, all packed in a good quality rucksack. Some trekking routes : The trek from Lamayuru in the Indus valley to Darcha in Lahual across Zanskar takes nearly three weeks. The 10 day Markha Valley trek and the 11 day Lamayuru-Padum traverse and the Stok-Khangiri round trek are the most popular treks. In the late autumn season treks like Hemis-Markha-Padum, a 13 day trek becomes operational.

Tungri-Zongkhul Gompa Trek

Tungri-Zongkhul Gompa Trek This four day trek around Padum takes you to the Sani and Zongkhul gompas by following the route up towards the Muni La, then cutting across to the base of the Umasi La.
