Bandhavgarh National Park (Tiger Reserve)
 

Location : Umaria District, Madhya Pradesh.

Area : 448 sq kms.

Access : By Air : Jabalpur (165 km), Khajuraho (210 km) By Rail : Umaria (30 km), Jabalpur (165 km) By Road : Nearest Bus stands are Umaria, Katni and Jabalpur.

Best time to visit : November to June.

Climate : The reservoir has a typical North Indian monsoon climate, with distinct summer and winter months.

Wildlife Found : Tigers, Leopards, Bears.

Introduction : Bandhavgarh National Park is located within the district of Sahdol in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, encircled by cliffs, this park is nestled between the Vindhya hills. The Reserve is named after the highest hill Bandhavgarh (807 m.) in the centre of the reserve and is surrounded by a number of smaller hills. Bandhavgarh National Park is one place where tigers can be seen in their natural habitat. Located 165 km from Jabalpur, it is a compact national park, yet full of game, having the highest tiger density in India. Stretching over 448 sq kms, it is also known as white tiger country. The white tigers have been found in the old state of Rewa for many years. Dominating the Bandhavgarh National Park is the 2000 years old Bandhavgarh fort and the numerous pre-historic caves, rich with inscriptions and drawings by pre-historic man and there are references to it in the ancient books -- the Narad-Panch Ratra and the Siva Purana.

Wildlife Species : Bandhavgarh National Park is rich with many other forms of wildlife and a variety of flora and fauna. The Tiger, panther, spotted deer, sambhar, blue bull, wild boar, great gaur or indian bison, barking deer etc, are found in the park. There are more than 22 species of mammals and 250 species of birds. Common langurs and rhesus macaque represent the primate group. Mammals such as dhole, the small Indian civet, palm squirrel and lesser bandicoot rat are seen occasionally.

Vegetation : Commanly found flora in the Bandhavgarh National Park area includes sal, saja,tendu, aonla dhawda,jamun, salai, garari, bamboo etc. The vegetation along streams and marshes is rich in bird life. The common ones are egret, sarus crane, black ibis, lesser whistling teal, white-eyed buzzard, black kite, etc. Reptilians include cobra, krait, viper, rat-snake, python, turtle and a number of lizard varieties, including varanus.

Safaris inside the park : Bandhavgarh National Park can be visited in a motor vehicle or on elephant back. Jeep safaris are undertaken during the early morning hours till evening. Elephant safari trips are organised for tiger tracking early in the morning. A forest department guide must always accompany you.
