Wildlife - Tour in Keibul Lamjao National Park
Location : Situated 53km from Imphal on the fringes of Loktak Lake. Area : 40 sq kms.
Best Time to Visit : December-May.
Access : By Air : Imphal is 53 km. from the park and is connected by flight to major cities of India. By Rail : Dimapur is 215 km. from Imphal and is the nearest railhead. By Road : Imphal is connected by road with Guwahati (469 km.) through National Highway No.39 and Silchar through National Highway No. 53.
Introduction : The worlds only floating National Park, on the Loktak Lake is the last natural habitat of "Sangai" - the dancing deer of Manipur. Only 40 sq.km in area, the park was once a hunting reserve. It was declared a sanctuary in 1954 when a great number of the Sangai were getting seriously decimated. The deer, noted for their curving antlers, live on the floating vegetation on the Loktak Lake. The Forest Department maintains watch towers and two rest houses within the park.
Wildlife Species : Wildlife species found in the Keibul Lamjao National Park are Sangai, tiger, leopard,gaur, musk deer, pig-tailed macaque, hornbills, otter and a host of water fowls and migratory birds.
